After the laying of submarine power cables to the mainland in the 1950s, OPALCO’s old deisel generators fell into disuse. Several were maintained for a few decades as back-up emergency power. The last generator was fired up for the last time in the mid 1990s. Demolition of the giant iron engines was piecemeal. Two were dismantled in 2007, another two in 2008 and 2010. The last remaining generator will be moved to the front yard of OPALCO headquarters in Eastsound during the summer of 2012.
